Associated Food Holdings founder and longtime president Harry Laufer has died. He was 83.
Laufer, who died Sunday, founded what was then Associated Food Stores in 1954 and retired as co-president in 2014.
“His visionary approach and background in the industry helped Associated Foods become one of the largest retail food markets in the United States,” Associated said in a statement.
“Harry Laufer was a pillar in the community, both professionally and personally. He will be missed by his family, friends and associates.”
A resident of Hewlett, L.I., Laufer was a member of Seawane Country Club.
Laufer leaves behind his wife of more than 60 years, Joan; four children, Francine, Adam, Pamela and Jessica; 14 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
